    A small satellite independently designed and built by CAS was sent into its preset orbit on Oct. 21. Named Chuangxin-1 (or Innovation-1), it is China's first experimental small satellite for data communications in Low Earth Orbit.

    Two Satellites, Chuangxin-1 and the second Earth Resources Satellite developed jointly by China and Brazil, were launched successfully by a Long March IV B carrier rocket, with rocket engine's steady roar like that of a thunderstorm at 11:16 a.m.(Beijing Time) at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi Province, north china.

    With a mass less than 100 kg, the Chuangxin-1 was developed in light of development trend of science and technology, says Prof. Jiang Mianheng, CAS vice president.

    Starting from 1999 with support of the national knowledge innovation program (KIP) spearheaded at CAS, the project has been carried out jointly by researchers from the CAS Shanghai Institute of Microsystem Information Technology, and the CAS Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics. Achievements have been made in a series of key technical issues such as spread spectrum communication in Low Earth Orbit.

    By adopting the designing principle of integration and payload modularization, the small satellite gives expression to its development philosophy: being better, faster and at a lower cost. Composed of such subsystems as communication transponder, onboard computer, attitude control, energy source, thermal control, and structure, the mission will play an important role in the data communications for such sectors as traffic and transportation, environment protection, oil and gas transportation, flood and drought control, detection of forest fire and earthquake monitoring, Jiang adds.

    Small satellite technology is a new field facing China space S&T workers. The successful launch and operation of the Chuangxin-1 will broaden the development spectrum of space science and technology in China, Jiang notes.
