At the banquet in honor of TWAS Beijing Meetings on Oct. 18, TWAS President C.N.R. Rao introduced new members of the Academy. Of the 43 newly elected TWAS Fellows in 2002, four are from China, namely, Prof. Guo Lei from the CAS Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences, Xu Shaoxie from the Institute of Geophysics, China Seismological Bureau, Ai Guoxiang from the National Astronomical Observatory of CAS, and Xian Dingchang from the CAS Institute of High Energy Physics.

    Ai Guoxiang

    Right after his graduation from the geophysics department of Peking university in 1963, Dr. Ai has been involved in astronomical observations. His invention of a birefringence filter for vector magnetic field measurement has been used to great advantage in the Huairou Solar Observing Station (HSOS). The so obtained data from HSOS are widely used by solar physicists around the world. Prof. Ai is the recipient of several first prizes of CAS, of which he is a Member.

    Guo Lei

    Dr. Guo is regarded as the leading control theorists from China. Two of this outstanding contributions have been (a) the proof of self-optimality of the famous "self-tuning regulator", and (b) the proof of some fundamental limits to what is stabilizable by adaptive control. Guo is a Fellow of IEE, Member of CAS, and the winner of the Young Author Prize of the International Federation of Automatic Control World Congress (1993) and the National Natural Science Prizes of China twice (1987, 1997).

    Xian Dingchang

    Prof. Xian worked earlier on non-Abelean gauge fields, but turned his efforts into photon beamline spectroscopy and devoted his attention to designing the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF) since 1985. Today he is a leading figure in the field of application of synchrotron radiation to molecular structure, archeological "fingerprints" and protein crystallography. He is a Member of CAS, and the recipient of several State Science Awards of China.

    Xu Shaoxie

    Dr. Xu has made outstanding contributions to scientific research on seismological monitoring of the international effort, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. He has made especially significant contributions in the important task of calibrating the monitoring system to achieve location estimates of seismic events. Besides this, Dr. Xu has performed important work on earthquake prediction in China. His development of broadband instruments helped distinguish seismologically between nuclear explosions and earthquakes. Professor Xu is a Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, and has been honored with the title "Expert on Earthquake Prediction" by the Chinese Seismological Bureau.
