First ICANN Engagement Center Opens In Beijing

Apr 16, 2013

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) opened its first global engagement office in Beijing on April 8, 2013, announced Fadi Chehade, president and chief executive officer of ICANN.

The office will be operated by China Internet Network Information Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CNNIC, CAS). As critical component of ICANN’s global strategy "One World, One Internet", the office will deepen exchange with local internet community, and enhance mutual understanding and trust to promote joint development in global internet.

Steve Crocker, chairman of ICANN board, pointed out that ICANN could know hot topics and hot spots in advance through the localized operations of its international internet management, and seek for help and support from the internet community in time. Crocker believes that the office will boost stable development of local internet environment.

"As the world’s first engagement center, the office would be not only a new link for ICANN to better develop and promote China internet community, but also a new platform for China internet community to contribute to global Internet”, said HU Qiheng, CAS academician and president of the Internet Society of China.

ICANN, formed in 1998, is a nonprofit private organization headquartered in Los Angeles, California, United States. It is responsible for the coordination of the global internet's systems of unique identifiers and, in particular, ensuring its stable and secure operation.
