Lab for AI-assisted Glaucoma Diagnosis and Image Analysis Established

Jan 10, 2019

A novel laboratory for AI-assisted glaucoma diagnosis and image analysis was jointly established by the Cixi Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC), Sun Yat-sen University on January 9, 2019.
Glaucoma is a major disease that will lead to vision loss. Though with over 13 million of glaucoma patients nationwide, there are only about 28,000 ophthalmologists in China. Thus the screening and diagnosis of glaucoma is a tough issue.
To address this situation, Cixi Institute of Biomedical Engineering jointly established a laboratory with ZOC, a topnotch ophthalmological center, for AI-assisted glaucoma diagnosis and image analysis. Different from conventional approaches, the employment of artificial intelligence (AI) enables the smart, rapid and accurate screening and diagnosis of glaucoma.
The laboratory will be developed based on ZOC’s REFUGE, a well-recognized ophthalmological database, and the cutting-edge research experience in smart glaucoma diagnosis of Prof. LIU Jiang’s team at NIMTE.
