About IHEP

The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), is one of the institutes under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has China’s top laboratory for particle physics. We want to understand the universe better at the most fundamental level – from the smallest subatomic particles to the large-scale structure of the cosmos. We also want to use the knowledge and technology that comes from our research for the good of humanity. As well as theoretical and experimental research into particle and astroparticle physics, we have a broad range of research in related fields such as accelerator technologies and nuclear analysis techniques. The Institute also provides beam facilities for researchers in other fields of study.

Working at IHEP are over 1500 full-time staff, as well as over 500 postdocs and graduate students. Particle physics is a very collaborative and a very international field, and we have partnerships and experiment collaborations with dozens of universities and research institutions across China and worldwide.

IHEP’s main campus is at Yuquan Road in the west part of Beijing. The Beijing campus hosts the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, the BESIII experiment, the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility, and most of IHEP’s research and administrative staff.

The Dongguan campus, is one of China's leading national research facilities for materials science (China Spallation Neutron Source, CSNS). It produces neutrons with an accelerator-based system that delivers proton pulses to a tungsten target through a process called spallation. These neutrons are then directed toward state-of-the-art instruments that provide a variety of capabilities to researchers across a broad range of disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. In addition, IHEP runs experiment sites at Jiangmen (Guangdong), Ali (Xizang) and Dao Cheng (Sichuan).
