THE 5TH WORLD CONGRESS OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES

Wolong Biosphere Reserve

Mar 20, 2025

Wolong Biosphere Reserve is home to giant pandas - and a global hub for conservation science. It is designated by UNESCO in 1979, Wolong has stood as a symbol of harmony between people and nature for decades. The reserve is not just iconic - it's a living model for sustainability in action.

This is the only place where in the world we can you find a protected area nearly the size of Shenzhen filled with giant pandas. Tucked away in Sichuan Province, China, this biosphere spans 200,000 hectares and serves as a stronghold for panda conservation and biodiversity.

Wolong is more than a reserve - it is the heart of some of the world's most ambitious conservation efforts. It leads in artificial breeding, releasing pandas into the wild, and witnessing rare wildlife moments in the famous "May Day Shed." It is a living lab for the future of biodiversity.
