Scientist WANG Zhenzhu with Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics under Hefei Institutes of Physical Science used new lidar technology to assist haze detection specifically the detection of haze vertical distribution near the ground.
Haze is the result of economic and social activities of high-density population which inevitably brings a large number of fine particles (or PM2.5). Once the emission exceeds the atmospheric circulation capacity and carrying capacity. These fine particles continue to accumulate when their emission exceeding the capacity of atmospheric circulation and carrying. And the situation may get worse when encountering the stable weather. All the conditions work together to produce the haze.
To fight against the haze, the key is to take a deep look at how it is formed. Based on dual CCD and CW laser, WANG and his team pushed their previous work further to develop a technology to detect haze vertical distribution in near ground. The new technology they developed lately possess advantages of smaller size and lower cost.
In their recent field observations, the team was happy to obtain the data to demonstrate its feasibility in haze vertical distribution detection in near ground as well as the to verify the new method for data inversion.
Lidar has been an advanced technology for high-resolution detection of haze and applied in air research area.
The work is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and supported by the Youth Innovation Promotion Association CAS, and so on.
