Sarez Lake Dam Deformation Monitoring System based on BeiDou Technology Put into Operation
The deformation monitoring system based on BeiDou technology for Sarez Lake Dam was completed and put into operation, according to the National Time Service Center (NTSC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
It marked a substantial step on international cooperation in disaster reduction and prevention between China and Tajikistan.
The system is led by NTSC, and participated by the Central Asia Ecological and Environmental Research Center of CAS, the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan, Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of Tajikistan.
The detection equipment was transported to the dam in 10 days. "After several days of debugging, we received the BeiDou signal from the beautiful Sarez Lake," said Prof. TU Rui, research leader from NTSC.
Located in the Pamir region in eastern Tajikistan, Sarez Lake is a barrier lake formed by the mountain collapse after a strong earthquake in 1911. Another hit in this earthquake active zone will bring immeasurable losses to millions of people in the lake area, and disaster to the ecological environment of Central Asia.
"Using high-precision positioning and communication technology of BeiDou, this system realizes real-time monitoring of the dam in millimeter level," said Prof. TU.
