Institute of Technology for Carbon Neutrality

Apr 06, 2022

In order to achieve the targets of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, make breakthroughs in carbon neutral basic science and cutting-edge technology, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of Chinese Academy of Sciences decided to set up Institute of Technology for Carbon Neutrality (abbreviated to SIAT-ITCN) in June 2021 to meet carbon neutral industry development needs of Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China.

Commitment:

Institute of Technology for Carbon Neutrality is committed to promote China's energy revolution. The institute maily focuses on different aspects of carbon neutral areas, including renewable energy (solar energy, hydrogen power, thermal energy, fuel cell), energy storage (power battery, grid energy storage technology, hydrogen storage technology), smart city energy (energy internet, vehicle to grid and shared energy storage, smart multi-energy complementary system), carbon dioxide capture and conversion (efficient capture and conversion, real-time monitor), carbon neutral economy and urban development (low-carbon and carbon-free energy supply, low-carbon industrial chain, carbon neutral policy, carbon absorption and ecological cultivation, compensation and incentive mechanism).

People:

At present, ITCN has established two research centers: The Low-Dimensional Energy Materials Research Center and Advanced Energy Storage Technology Research Center, with more than 60 staff members. Moving forward, ITCN plans to recruite talents from all over the world, to a total mumber of around 500~800 and to have a wide coverage of carbon-neutral related technologies.

Research:

For now, the Institute of Technology for Carbon Neutrality has established several governmental key laboratories and engineering centers related to carbon neutralization, such as Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Carbon Neutral Energy Materials, Guangdong Engineering Center of High-efficiency and Low-cost Energy Storage Devices, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Team supported by Guangdong Pearl River Talents Program, Shenzhen Key Technology Research and Development Team for High-efficiency and Low-cost Devices, etc.

In addition, ITCN is closely cooperating with a number of leading enterprises in the field of carbon neutralization, such as Huawei, BYD, ZTE, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), Skyworth, SEMCORP Group, TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology (TCL CSOT), JoySun New Energy, and AIMA Technology Group, etc.

International cooperation:

ITCN has also established good cooperative relations with City University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, University of St Andrews and University of Surrey in England, Griffith University and the University of Queensland in Australia, Synchrotron Light Research Institute in Thailand, Nagaoka University of Technology in Japan, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, and other international and domestic scientific research institutes.

ITCN isworking to further expand our cooperation with more significant enterprises and scientific research institutes in the area of carbon neutralization at both home and abroad.

Vision:

Moving forward, the industry, university and research will be jointly promoted. More over,a four-in-one research and industrial operation management mechanism for achieving carbon neutrality will be established to integrate scientific research platform, industrial alliance, industrial investment fund, and incubated and cooperative enterprises.

ITCN aims to promote a systematic and transformative energy revolution with innovative and subversive carbon neutralization technologies, driving Shenzhen to build a world R & D highland in the field of low-carbon energy conversion and storage, and helps Shenzhen and even China to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.
