In January 2017, Micius, world's first quantum science satellite independently developed by China, was delivered for scientific experiments. Led by Pan Jianwei from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the research team, for the first time in the world, realized satellite-based distribution of entangled photon pairs over 1,200 kilometers and a violation of Bell inequality, satellite-to-ground quantum key distribution and ground-to-satellite quantum teleportation. They have successfully completed all three experiments designed for Micius a year ahead of schedule.
In September 2017, world's first quantum communication backbone – "Beijing-Shanghai Backbone" was put into formal use. Combining the backbone with Micius quantum satellite, the first intercontinental quantum communication has been successfully demonstrated. China has initially constructed the prototype of the space-ground wide-area quantum communication network.
USTC, together with other collaborators, built world's first photon quantum computer in May, which is faster than the world's first electronic and transistor computers. Related results were published on Nature Photonics and Physical Review Letters. This achievement was listed in President Xi's 2018 New Year speech.
