Salvia Miltiorrhiza Depsides Salts: A Paradigm of Drug R&D from TCM

Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica

Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, known as “Danshen”, stands as a quintessential example of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is renowned for its promoting blood circulation and dissolving blood stasis.

Based on the investigation of hydrophilic constituents of Salvia miltiorrhiza chemically and pharmacologically, magnesium lithospermate B and other depsides salts were identified as the most potent components for alleviating ischemic myocardial injury.

Inspired by this pivotal discovery, Salvia Miltiorrhiza Depsides Salts (SMDS) was developed by 13-year endeavor to confirm its efficacy, safety and quality controllability for the treatment of coronary artery disease and chronic angina pectoris.

After its licensing in 2005, SMDS has undergone series of post-marketing investigations, including additional randomized controlled trials in real-world settings, as well as explorations into its mode of action and molecular targets.

These endeavors have yielded substantial evidence reinforcing the clinical utility and safety of SMDS. Over 25 million patients were benefited from SMDS to date, solidifying its reputation as a paradigm of TCM modernization in China.
