China’s First Domestic B-mode Ultrasound Diagnostic Instrument

Institute of Acoustics

In 1981, the Institute of Acoustics (Shanghai Acoustics Laboratory) independently developed China’s first B-mode ultrasound diagnostic instrument (Brightness-mode Ultrasound, in black and white).

This achievement, using self-designed signal acquisition and imaging processing solutions, realized fully digital image display with its display quality reaching an international advanced level.

This was the first domestic B-mode ultrasound equipment to be used in clinical diagnosis and to be successfully industrialized, giving a strong push to the development of China’s medical ultrasound technology and industry.

The institute then developed key technology for the country’s first domestic Color Doppler ultrasound instrument in the 1990s, based on its previous achievements.
