World's First Monkey Clones Produced by Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer
Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology
The Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology was the first in the world to achieve a breakthrough in somatic cell cloning technology for nonhuman primates.
In 2017, it produced the first cloned primates, "Zhong Zhong" and "Hua Hua," through somatic cell nuclear transfer. This technology has since been applied to the development of brain disease models, creating genetically identical macaque monkeys with circadian rhythm disorders.
This technology promotes fundamental research on bioscience and accelerates progress in translational medicine. It also sheds light on the establishment of effective diagnosis, treatment, and medical intervention methods as well as the development of new drugs.
