Polyploid Gibel Carp First Bred in China
Institute of Hydrobiology
Around the 1980s, the Institute of Hydrobiology began research on the theory of breeding polyploid gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio) and on its production. After continuous and determined efforts by three generations of scientists, including CAS Member GUI Jianfang, new varieties such as gibel carp "Zhongke 3" and gibel carp "Zhongke 5" were bred.
These varieties account for about 70% of production in China’s main polyploid gibel carp farming areas and also significantly increased yield and quality. Total production of polyploid gibel carp increased from 48,000 tons in 1983 to 2.784 million tons in 2021, making delicious carp available to every Chinese family.
