FAST: World’s Largest Single-aperture Radio Telescope
National Astronomical Observatories
The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is the world’s largest single-aperture radio telescope. It was constructed under the leadership of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and began operation in 2016.
With 4,450 reflecting panels, equivalent to the size of 30 soccer fields, the radio telescope leads the world in comprehensive performance and sensitivity, significantly expanding humanity’s view of the universe.
Since it went into service, FAST has made a series of important findings, including “first reporting the complete energy spectrum of fast radio bursts and their bimodal structure” and “discovering key evidence for the existence of nanohertz gravitational waves.”
