First BGO Crystal in China
Shanghai Institute of Ceramics
In 1978, the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics began research on bismuth germanate (BGO) single crystals. In the 1980s, the institute successfully developed 24cm-long large BGO single crystals.
These crystals satisfied the requirements for the BGO scintillator at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), thus winning the institute a strong reputation in the synthetic crystal field and the international high-energy physics community.
