XSSC symposium addresses hydrological sciences

Nov 09, 2008

    Under the sponsorship of the Xiangshan Science Conferences (XSSC), a symposium was held from  4 to 6 November in Beijing. Focusing on the fundamental issues at the cutting edge of water sciences, the three-day meeting invited scholars from different realms to explore the origin of a water crisis from the perspective of basic sciences, identify research priorities for solving the key problems and develop new methods, new expertise and new materials with promising potential.

    Water is the most ordinary and most important substance on Earth, making the natural world full of vigor and vitality. Yet, water crises constitute a major concern of the current world. In China, the water quality of its three biggest freshwater lakes has incurred influence on people's life and social development, arousing concern from both the national authorities and the international S&T community. It is important to make a decent understanding of the basic problems in water sciences so as to deal with water crises in a scientific way, because the issues are not only posing a grave challenge to world S&T workers in the field, but also a key constraint for national development.

    Focusing on the complex system engineering of managing the water crises, discussions was made on such topics as a contaminant molecule's absorption at the interface/surfaces between water and materials, its electrolysis/photolysis, new materials capable of carrying out water purification, their working mechanisms, water's morphology and behavior in response to restrictive conditions.

    WANG Enge from the CAS Institute of Physics;

    HU Jun from the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics;

    PAN Gang from the CAS Center for Eco-environmental Research;
