Shih Choon Fong
Shih uses his international influence to promote the educational internationalization of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Thanks to his active coordination, many UCAS undergraduates have been given opportunities to study in the world's leading universities such as MIT and Oxford for up to half-year. He also facilitated collaborations that enable outstanding undergraduates from UCAS to pursue PhD studies in the world's leading universities, which help CAS to cultivate scientists with global outlook and innovative spirit.
Shih has been actively promoting CAS’s industry-university-research institute development and has devoted much effort to launching and developing the UCAS’s innovation and technology transfer center. He has visited many CAS institutes and made speeches on innovation and entrepreneurship education as well as technology transfer. He has been vigorously championing a CAS-led Liquid Sunshine International Coalition to offer green energy solutions. The coalition has the support of some of the world’s top universities and enterprises, thereby opening a new chapter for CAS in leading the development of the global green innovation industry.
Nils Christian Stenseth
Nils Christian Stenseth is one of the world’s top biologists. He has served as the president of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and as director of the Center Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo, and is an academician of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Academia Europaea, the French Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Science, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Finland. In 2011, Nils was awarded the French decoration Chevalier in the Order of the Legion d'Honneur. Through integrating ecology, evolutionary biology and mathematics, he revealed the impact and mechanism of global change on animal population fluctuations, disease outbreaks and epidemics. His research focuses on many ecosystems, including those of land, freshwater and ocean areas, exploring a new way of making breakthrough research and outstanding contributions to the development of ecology and evolutionism.
Stenseth has cooperated with CAS for more than 20 years and has greatly improved CAS’s research on the dynamic relationship between large-scale climate change and pest population, breaking through the traditional understanding of the relationship between climate change and disease epidemics. He has formed innovative theories, applied them to research on the occurrence and early warning of many diseases, and made a series of leading internationally important achievements. His work has enabled CAS to reach the frontier in the field of biological disaster prevention and control and significantly enhanced the institute’s monitoring and early warning of biological disasters.
Stenseth has enrolled and trained scientific and technological talents in CAS for a long time and actively supported the cooperation between CAS and international organizations such as the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). He has also recommended CAS staff for important position in international organizations, supported the CAS-initiated International Society of Zoological Sciences and the Biological Effects of Global Change Program, and made outstanding contributions to CAS’s scientific and technological innovation. He has contributed greatly to talents’ training and international development and expansion of CAS’s global presence.
Toshio Koike is a world famous hydro meteorologist, the director of the UNESCO International Center for Water Hazard and Risk Management and vice chairman of the WCRP Data Advisory Council.
He is a former chairman of the Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period (CEOP) and has been awarded in Japan and abroad by important organizations such as the Japan Society of Hydrology and Water Resources and the Meteorological Society of Japan, which honored him with the "Horiuchi" Prize.
Toshio Koike is a pioneer and leader in promoting global cooperative observation and building big data on global climate observation. He has made pioneering achievements in the geo-gas assimilation system and integrated water resource management.
He has carried out scientific cooperation with CAS for more than 20 years, which has greatly strengthened CAS’ observation and research ability on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and expanded its global presence in this field.
He and CAS worked on a number of large-scale Sino-Japanese joint observation projects on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, providing CAS with funding, technology and equipment, as well as valuable long-term observation data, for the study of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau area in China.
Toshio Koike has also participated in the layout planning and construction of CAS’s field stations on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, set up the plateau’s basic framework for climate observation there and advanced the rapid development of related disciplines, enabling CAS to be a leader rather than a follower in "the third polar environment" research.
He has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Third Polar Environment (TPE) International Program for a long time and has continuously contributed to CAS’s research of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Toshio Koike has been deeply involved in CAS’s overall development and strategic planning. He has repeatedly recommended CAS scientists to carry out academic research on world-class international platforms and helped them obtain important positions. He has trained many young scientists for CAS and made outstanding contributions to the training of researchers and the scientific strength of CAS in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau program.
