IECAS Researcher Returned from the 26th Chinese Antarctic Scientific Expedition

Apr 27, 2010

The “Snow Dragon” vessel carrying all 249 expedition members moored at Shanghai Polar Research Institute of China’s domestic base wharf on April 10 after completing 26th Chinese Antarctic Scientific Expedition.

Doctor ZHAO Bo with the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) participated in Grove Mountain inland research and completed his research to the mountain’s subglacial terrain and landform.

During the Grove Mountain Inland Research period, Doctor ZHAO conducted geophysical exploration to subglacial landform and basin in Mason Peak and partial regions of Harding Mountain. The high-quality measurement data Dr. ZHAO obtained will offer scientific references for researching ice & snow sediment layer, upper ice cover thickness, subglacial landform and subglacial ancient sedimentary basin landform.

It is the first time China has used independent researched ice radar equipment for Antarctic inland ice cover detection test.

The 26th Chinese Antarctic Scientific Expedition team started on October 11, 2009 from Shanghai, with total time span of 182 days. The “Snow Dragon” polar research vessel sailed safely for more than 32,000 sea miles.

The expedition team members from 70 units all over China completed missions of materials supply to Antarctic Great Wall Station and Zhongshan Station, personnel transportation, ocean research, and research station construction & reconstruction.
