As one of the most ancient energy source for human and an important renewable energy resource, biofuel resource is very important, and accelerating the development and utilization of biofuel resource has a great significance. Supported by Yunnan Provincial Development and Reform Commission and led by Prof. Sun Weibang, a research group consisting of scientists of multiple disciplines including plant taxonomy, plant introduction and cultivation, molecular biology, plant physiology, phytochemistry and ethnobotany, has investigated and gathered basic informative materials concerning biological, ecological and economic characteristics of Jatropha curcas in a short period of time. Through additional field surveys and studies on chemical components of the plant oils, the research group has thoroughly and systematically analyzed and summarized the geographic distribution of Jatropha curcas in whole Yunnan, parts of Sichuan and Guangxi provinces, with information of the resource quantity, ecological and biological features, optimum habitats for, targeted biomass per unit area and chemical property of plant oil, etc. Meanwhile, the research group has carried out complete analyses and evaluation on climatically and geographically optimum regions for plantation of Jatropha curcas, principles for  industrial development planning and challenges for Yunnan to develop the industry of Jatropha curcas were outlined, which can be extremely valuable data and reference for the industrial development planning of Jatropha curcas in Yunnan. The program has already evaluated the acceptance inspection by a group of experts sponsored by Yunnan Provincial Development and Reform Commission.
