ITER’S PF Converter Prototype up to Design Standards

Jun 09, 2014

The first ITER’S poloidal field (PF) AC\DC converter prototype, a part of China’s biggest ITER PA, was tested and approved to be able to meet all technical requirements of ITER design.

Witnessed by Technical staffs from ITER organization, the Chinese Domestic Agency and manufacturer, the integration test was conducted in the Power Supply lab. As expected, ITER PF converter unit demonstrated good performance during the series of stringent tests.

The purpose of the test is to verify whether all the components, including the installation and assembly meet the system requirementand realize the different operating modes when the input voltage is AC 66 kV, and the DC current varies from almost zero to rated current.

The PF AC\DC converter prototype is composed of AC disconnector, rectifier transformers, thyristor modules, thyristor bypass, DC disconnector, DC inductors, local controller, etc. the rated power at 80MVA, rated current at 55kA. In the end of 2013, ASIPP had performed all component tests of PF converter unit, including 31 items of routine and type test.

The success of the test will provide data for final design review, and experience for future batch production.
