The Tibetan glaciers are shrinking. Most of the retreat is thought to be taking place at low elevations, but research now shows that the glaciers may also be losing ice at altitudes up to 6,000 metres. “The glaciers are virtually being decapitated from the top by a warming climate,” says Kang Shichang, a glaciologist at Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research in Beijing.
National science academies in China and the UK published a joint statement for further cooperation on Friday. Royal Society President Paul Nurse visited Beijing in September. To encourage Chinese and Britain scientists to strengthen their cooperation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society took the occasion as an opportunity to publish the statement.
The Chinese National Committee of Man and Biosphere (MAB) Program on Sunday awarded prizes to four foreigners and one Chinese for their contributions to the country's biological diversity protection. This is the first prize of its kind granted by the think tank affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences since its establishment in 1978.
In a long-awaited finding, a team of Chinese and US scientists has determined the high-resolution atomic structure of a cell-surface receptor that most strains of HIV use to get into human immune cells. The researchers also showed where maraviroc, an HIV drug, attaches to cells and blocks HIV’s entry.
Sir Paul Nurse, President of the Royal Society and 2001 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, gave a lecture at the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) Yuquanlu campus on September 12. Hosted by CAS Vice President Li Jinghai, Sir Paul Nurse was also conferred an honorary professorship by UCAS Vice President Su Gang after the lecture.
CAS President BAI Chunli highlighted contributions by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) to sustainability in the developing world during a Tuesday ceremony in Beijing celebrating the 30th anniversary of TWAS’s founding. BAI is also president of TWAS. BAI, who became the first Chinese president of TWAS in January, also outlined CAS’s strong support for the organization.
