The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the country's top research institution, on Saturday formed an alliance with 17 provincial academies of sciences to share resources and improve innovation. Through the alliance, the provincial institutions can take part in nationwide or regional research programs and contribute their expertise, CAS President Bai Chunli said at the founding ceremony.
John Wiley & Sons, Inc., announced that Dr. Chang Liu, professor of psychology at Nanjing Normal University, has won the first annual Wiley-IPCAS prize for excellence in Chinese psychological science. The prize, valued at $5000, is awarded by Wiley in partnership with the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IPCAS), China’s national psychology research institute.
Experts have rejected a report that climate change threatens to drive giant pandas to extinction in the wild as rising temperatures wipe out bamboo stocks for the endangered species. They say the animals are unlikely to suffer from hunger. Bamboo, the panda's staple food, is growing well in major panda habitats, said Ouyang Zhiyun, chief of the State Key Laboratory of Urban and Regional Ecology under the CAS.
"Our geographical distribution of sci-tech resources does not match with economic development in some regions, so we combine local demands with the national sci-tech strategy, and try to adapt our research to economic development," said Pan Jiaofeng, deputy secretary-general of CAS.
Chinese scientists have pinpointed the source of the Huaihe River and remeasured the length of the river, which, along with the Qinling Mountains, is regarded as the geographical line dividing China's north and south. The origin of the Huaihe River is located within the territory of Checun Town in Song County in central China's Henan Province.
"I felt sincerely happy," Bai said on the sidelines of the Communist Party's 18th national congress in Beijing. "But … I am more concerned about when the Chinese scientific community will make an innovative, Nobel Prize-level breakthrough that can greatly propel the development of China's people and the advancement of human society.
