Science popularization in residential neighborhood

Science in Community, an annual popular science event, opened at the Deshengmen Neighborhood in Xicheng District in Beijing on November 15. Its theme this year is gene modified (GM) foods.

In cooperation with the government of the District, this event was organized by the CAS Institute of Policy and Management (IPM) and several CAS institutions affiliated to IPM, including the CAS Center for Strategic Studies and the CAS Center for S&T Ethics.

The activity is expected to further dialogues and exchanges between research professionals and the general public so as to acquaint the common people with scientific knowledge and help scholars and governmental officials get to know the public's awareness and demands.

To make preparations for this activity, the organizers held training courses for volunteers. On the courses, experts were invited to give lectures on various topics, ranging from What is GM foods? the GM foods and health; GM foods and ethics; to GM food labels and the consumer's choice; and legislature on GM food safety.
