Botanists finish floral survey along Sino-Vietnamese borderline

Oct 21, 2008

A group of scientists recently completed a field investigation on plants in the border region between China and Vietnam, scoring encouraging achievements.

This was the last trip for a research project on floral investigation in the border areas of China and Vietnam supported by US National Geographic Society.

Headed by SHUI Yumin with the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB), this trip involved researchers from such institutions as the Smithsonian Institute, the CAS Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden and the CAS Institute of Botany.

With an objective of exploring the unique species in the karst area of the region in its ecosystem, taxonomic and genetic diversities, the survey concentrated its efforts on an endemic plant – Caryota urens Linn., collecting data about 18 of its native populations and related molecular materials on indigenous communities.

In the aspect of taxonomic specification, the survey initially identifies eight new taxa in the families of Araliaceae, Vitaceae, Ebenaceae, Fagaceae, Liliaceae, and Aceraceae, exhibiting the area's relatively high floral specificity. The survey's completion, researchers believed, will be conducive to laying a solid foundation for making clear the local biodiversity of plants and its protection.
