Surveys conducted on water & coal resources in Xinjiang

Sep 02, 2008

With an objective of offering suggestions for the local development, a group of CAS Members and experts carried out studies on energy and water resources from 24 to 28 August in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

As a component of "the trips to both sides of the Tianshan Mountain," a consultative service program of the CAS Academic Divisions started four years ago, this year's study is to deal with exploitation and utilization of coal and water resources.

Focusing on the current state concerning the exploitation of the water resources in the valley of Aksu River, a taskforce conducted research into the following topics: construction of energy and agricultural bases and utilization of water resources; the present state and major snags regarding water resources utilization in the region and its carrying capacities; possible impacts of glacier change on water resources, ecosystems and socio-economic development; bottlenecks & counter-measures for sustainable development; and development potentials and project in need of supports from authorities at different levels.

Based on the investigation, experts put forward suggestions for the valley's industrial development, exploitation of the water resources, involving a local development model compatible with its energy resources and an approach of staged development. They also made suggestions on the introduction of a low-carbon economy by reducing energy consumption, raising utilization efficiency, curbing greenhouse gas emissions and taking advantages of diversified local energy sources.

Regarding the strategy for future development of water resources,  efforts should be made to promote water-saving at various aspects ranging from publicity, technology, personnel and industrial structure, according to experts.

Surveys were also implemented in the east part of the Junggar Basin and Hami Prefecture to conduct studies on energy-related problem, including the construction of a production and processing base for the hydro-carbon trove; the exploitation and integrated development of coal and coal seam gas and accelerated construction of a regional base for large-scale re-usable energy production.

At a meeting held on August 25 in Jimsar City, Changji Hui Autonomo Prefecture, the experts made a analysis and discussion on the development trend of the local industries of power and coal chemicals. On the morning of 26 Augus, they made a field investigation concerning the coalfield's history, coal-mining technology, output capacity, contents of the coal seam gas in the open mining points and underground pits in the Prefecture.
