Driving force for scientific research needs strategic guidance

Dec 24, 2007

The motive force behind the scientific research originates from the demands of socio-economic development and scientists' curiosity, desires for creation and imagination. However, an innovation value chain won't be complete without strategic guidance, says CAS President LU Yongxiang.

The motive force behind the scientific research comes from the demands of social-economic development and scientists' curiosity, desires for creation, and imagination. However, an innovation value chain won't be complete without strategic guidance, said CAS President LU Yongxiang during a field trip to the CAS Institute of Chemistry on 21 December in Beijing.

He stressed that, by being geared both to the world science frontiers and the strategic demands of the country, CAS should render S&T backing to China's drive for social and economic development in a scientific and coordinated way via paying close attention to the nation's needs in the fields of energy, resources, ecology and the environment, and focusing its research objectives, and offering solutions to major S&T problems.

During his inspection trip, Prof. Lu visited the CAS Key laboratory of Photochemistry, Key Laboratory of Organic Solid Studies. He also listened to the report on research advances in the fields of solar cells, energy and green chemistry, advanced polymer materials, oxidation desulfurization.
