Nov 18, 2007

Hosted by the CAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics and the local government, the International Workshop on Environmental Changes and Sustainable Development in Arid and Semi-arid Regions was held recently in Alashan Left Banner, Inner Mongolia.

The meeting was sponsored by a number of international and domestic organizations including International Association of Geomorphologists, Commission on Land Degradation and Desertification, Chinese Association for Quaternary Research, the Geological Society of China, bringing together more than 80 scholars from 17 countries.

The participants held discussions on the following four tipics: case studies and theories relating to land degradation and sustainable development in arid and semi-arid as well as sub-humid regions of various continents; comparisons of regional-scale reconstruction of Late Quaternary changes in the deserts of various climate zones (monsoon regions, subtropics and westerlies); natural and human impacts on the landscape in various climate zones; and interactions amongst aeolian, fluvial and lacustrine processes in desert margins.
