Make zoology meet the needs of the times

May 21, 2007

Zoological studies should make further efforts to introduce new technology and methods while carrying out research of original innovation to meeting the challenges and opportunities of the era characterized with globalization, IT application and network, says CAS President LU Yongxiang.

Zoological studies should make further efforts to introduce new technology and methods while carrying out research of original innovation to meeting the challenges and opportunities of the era characterized with globalization, IT application and network, says CAS President LU Yongxiang.

Prof. Lu made the remarks when inspecting the CAS Institute of Zoology (IOZ) on 17 May in Beijing. During the tour, he listened to the work report by IOZ Director ZHANG Zhibin and visited IOZ museum and labs.

Prof. Lu emphasizes that the institute should carefully identify its research priorities and make disciplinary adjustment in light of both the internal development of zoology discipline and outside demands of the national socio-economic development. More research efforts should be made in the fields concerning the key strategic demands such as agriculture and animal husbandry, bio-diversity protection, bio-safety, animal resources, medical science, health and poplar science.

He expressed the hope that IOZ would adopt an even wider perspective in international cooperation and form strategic partnership with research bodies across the world.
