LIANG Shuquan (Shu-Chuan Liang, 1912-2006), a pioneer for China's analytical chemistry and environment chemistry and a chemist from the CAS Institute of Chemistry, died on Dec. 9 in Beijing.
Liang graduated from the former Yenching University in 1933 and received his Ph.D. from Munich University, Germany in 1937.
Prof. Liang was a specialist in inorganic analysis, conducting studies of the analytical method for sulfate, fluoride, tungsten, molybdenum and rare earth elements. He also developed analytical methods for unearthed bronze of Shang Dynasty and methods for trace and micro-analysis. He won an award for his creative work in the analysis of rare earth elements in Baotou Baiyun iron ore. He was elected a CAS member in 1955, and received a Tan Kah Kee Science Award in Chemistry in 1995.
