    In recognition of his contributions to the frontiers of science, CAS Vice President Chen Zhu was conferred Doctor of Science honoris causa by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on March 18 in Hong Kong.

    Prof. Chen's work is recognized and acclaimed around the world as being at the forefront of genomic research, particularly in the advancement of molecular target-based therapy on human cancers. He was the first non-French winner of the "Prix de l'Oise" by La Ligue Nationale contre le Cancer of France in 1997, and he was named "Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur" by the French government in 2002

    Honorary Degrees are awarded to individuals in HKU in recognition of their distinguished service and commitment to the University, the community, and to academia. They are also conferred to those who have made valuable intellectual, social and cultural contributions to society and the world. Since its establishment, HKU has awarded honorary doctoral degrees to more than 260 distinguished individuals.

    Other prestidious figures receiving UHK honorary degrees on the same day were: Doctor of Laws honoris causa, Sir Anthony Mason, Non-permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal and former Chief Justice of Australia, and Dr the Honourable Donald Tsang Yam Kuen, Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government; Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa, Dr Charles Lee Yeh Kwong, Chairperson of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited. The degrees were conferred by HKU Pro-Chancellor David Li.
