Worldwide Chinese high-tech chemistry conference convenes in Chengdu

    The Second Worldwide Chinese High-Tech Chemistry Conference (CHiTeC) was held from August 7 to 10 in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.

    Organized by the CAS Chengdu Institute of Organic Chemistry (Chengdu Organic Chemicals Co. Ltd), the meeting was attended by about 200 scholars from across the world. Its theme was to hold discussions on frontier issues of world chemistry, exchange and exhibit up-to-date results in chemical engineering, encourage cooperation among worldwide Chinese chemists in the sectors of industry, education and research, and promote progress and development of China's high-tech chemistry.

    Six plenary lectures were given at the meeting on such topics as pharmaceutical & agro-chemistry, photo-electronic chemistry, advanced materials, bio-technology, new synthetic technology and methodology and chemical additives. There were also 61 invited talks and five lectures on high-tech chemistry.

    As a biennial event, the first ChiTeC was held in 2001 in Lanzhou in 2001. Its 2003 meeting was postponed until 2004 due to the outbreak of SARS epidemic.
