International conference to coordinate Tokamak research

Jun 20, 2004

Under auspices of the CAS Institute of Plasma Physics (ASIPP), the 5th International Tokamak Physics Activity Coordinating Committee (ITPA-CC) meeting was held in Shanghai on June 10 and 11.

A total of 27 coordinators from EU, US, Russia, Japan, China and the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) International Team attended the meeting. It is the first time for China to hold and attend such a meeting since it joined the ITPA last year at ASIPP proposal.

The International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) is a joint action of fusion programs in its participants' countries, including EU, Japan, Russia, US and China. With an objective of cooperation in the development of the physics basis for burning tokamak plasmas, ITPA continues promoting the tokamak physics R&D activities that have been conducted at international level for many years. The activities have led to achievements of a broad physics basis valuable for all fusion programs, for the ITER design, and for general tokamak research worldwide.

The organizational structure of the ITPA consists of one Coordinating Committee and seven Topical Physics Groups. ITPA Coordinating Committee (CC) meets once a year.

At this year's CC meeting, new Chairman of the Coordinating Committee was elected and a book titled Tokamak Physics Basis for Burning Plasmas was approved. Representatives of participating countries reported the status and plans of programs in their nations. Semi-Annual Reports of seven technical groups have been released, and 2004-2005 high priority research areas agreed.
