Jan 07, 2004

Prof. An Zhisheng, an expert in Quaternary geology of the CAS Institute of Earth Environment in Xi'an, has been appointed vice chair of the Scientific Committee for the International Geosphere and Biosphere Program (SC-IGBP).  The notification was made recently by Mr. Will Steffen, Executive Director of IGBP Secretariat.

The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) was inaugurated by the International Council for Science (ICSU) in 1986 to meet the challenge of global sustainability. Its scientific objective is to tackle the interactive physical, chemical and biological processes that regulate the total Earth System, the unique environment that it provides for life, the changes that are occurring in this system, and the manner in which they are influenced by human actions.

SC-IGBP provides the overall scientific guidance for the research program, develops specific scientific plans, oversees their implementation, and helps to publicize the results. SC-IGBP members are appointed by ICSU Executive Board. Their term is normally three years, once renewable.

Prof. An, who is also CAS Member and President of the CAS Xi'an Branch, has been devoted to research into loess and the environment, stratigraphy, palaeoclimatology and palaeopedology, magnetostratigraphy and micromorphology. His appointment at the SC-IGBP is considered as the world acknowledgement of global change studies in China.
