A delegation led by Dr. Wendy Jarvie, Australian Deputy Secretary of Education, Science and Training, paid a visit, on Nov. 26, to the Sino-Australian Joint Lab of Soil Environment Science, which is located at CAS Research Center for Eco-Environment Sciences (RCEES) in Beijing.

    The Australian visitors were received by RCEES Deputy Director Jiang Guibin, and briefed on the development of the joint lab by its founding director Zhu Yongguan (Y-G Zhu). Dr. Jarvie expressed satisfaction over the development of the joint lab, praising it as a good example for the successful cooperation in science and education between the two countries.

    The Joint Lab, the first of its kind between China and Australia, was a brainchild of RCESS and University of Adeladide after several visits made by high-ranking officials from both sides, including CAS Vice President Chen Yiyu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) of Adelaide Prof. Edwina Cornish, and RCEES Director Zhao Jingzhu, in 1999 and 2001, respectively, according to Prof. Zhu, who worked at Adelaide as a research fellow from 1998 to 2001 and joined RCEES in January 2002.

    Under the agreement between RCEES and Adelaide, the lab will focus on soil environment quality and food safety, soil-plant interaction & eco-recovery, as well as the impact of trace elements in the soil-plant system on human health.

    The opening ceremony for the joint lab was held in Beijing on October 30, 2002. The Joint Lab in Adelaide was opened in Nov. 2003 during CAS President Lu Yongxiang's trip to the university.

    The past year has witnessed encouraging progress at the Joint Lab at RCEES, said Zhu. One of its first initiatives was an international workshop on soil-plant interactions held in Beijing, which received over 50 papers presented by researchers from 12 countries. This workshop was featured in an international journal New Phytologist, and its proceedings are being published by Kluwer as a special issue of the journal Plant and Soil with Professors Y-G Zhu and F. Andrew Smith as guest editors.

    The cooperative research between the two sides has led to the joint publication of scientific papers in international journals, such as Plant and Soil, Environmental International, New Phytologist, Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology.

    Zhu highlighted the importance of the joint lab as a vehicle for capacity building for Chinese scientists. These included training workshops on data presentations, conference talks, writing abstracts and posters, and scientific papers; and joint supervision of graduate students. "What we do is unique," noted Prof. Zhu. "We give a facelift to Chinese research by developing science culture rather than hardware."

    In addition, the lab has made efforts to promote the exchanges of scientists and scientific administrators. Two scientists from Beijing are currently working at Adelaide, and frequent visits have been made by researchers from Adelaide to Beijing.

    The initiative is mutual beneficial, Zhu stressed. It could promote the Australian export of educational resources by providing a platform to demonstrate its strength and to conduct complimentary research. The advantage of the international collaboration is "to get things done more efficiently,' asserted Prof. Zhu.
