The past four years have served as a phase of sound inception for the development of the CAS Institute of Neuoscience (ION), noted Prof. Mu-ming Poo, founding Director of ION, at the 2003 anniversary meeting held from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1 in Shanghai.

    Founded on Nov. 27, 1999 as a brainchild of a CAS-wide drive for excellence in basic research known as the Knowledge Innovation Program (KIP), ION is devoted to the whole spectrum of neuroscience, including molecular and cellular neurobiology, developmental neurobiology, systems and behavioral neuroscience, and computational and cognitive neuroscience.  After the four-year-long development, the Institute has so far scored encouraging and rewarding progress.

    According to Poo, who is also Head of Division of Neurobiology in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at University of California, Berkeley, ION has been successful in stepping up the infrastructure for a state-of-the-art research institution in the course of its inception, providing an environment agreeable to rigorous scientific research endeavors and fruitful cooperation with colleagues both at home and abroad.

    Specifically, the move involves a support and management system at ION that facilitates various research activities, a merit-based system for appraisal, promotion and reward and research-funding procedure in addition to high-quality education and training programs for Chinese neuroscientists.

    An International Advisory Board consisting of a group of renowned neurologists from abroad and the ION Council composed of distinguished Chinese scientists are providing critical inputs into the organizational work and research activities at ION.

    Currently, the ION has nine independent research laboratories: Laboratory of Cellular Biophysics, Laboratory of Learning and Memory, Laboratory of Molecular Neurobiology, Laboratory of Neural Signal Transduction, Laboratory of Neural Plasticity, Laboratory of Retinal Structure and Function, Laboratory of Sensory Systems, Laboratory of Synapse Development and Plasticity, and Laboratory of Vision and Cognition.

    Looking into the future, Poo predicted that the period from 2004 to 2009 would be a stage of burgeoning growth for ION. "Our goal is to reach a steady state of 30 laboratories by the year 2010. And the years after that will be ION's season of bumper harvest," he said with confidence and pride.
