    Prof. Lu made these remarks at a summit meeting on the strategy for international cooperation sponsored by CAS on Nov. 26 and 27 in Beijing. The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials in charge of international cooperation from the Ministry of Science and Technology, China Association for Science and Technology, China Association for International Science and Technology Cooperation, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and CAS headquarters and its subordinate institutes.

    Although CAS will continue to pursue a policy of all-round advancement in this aspect, priorities will be given to cooperative initiatives with European countries, the US, Japan and Russia, with attention to developing and neighboring countries, Lu revealed.

    In addition, CAS Vice-President Chen Zhu asserted at the conference that CAS would step up its cooperation with foreign countries in the fields and issues which have a critical bearing on social and economic development of this country, such as life sciences, space technology, informatics, energy sources, urbanization, public health, national security and manufacturing industries.

    Prof. Chen further stressed that CAS would encourage its institutes to establish strategic partnerships with institutes or world-renowned research institutions, such as Max Planck Society in Germany, CNRS in France, RIKEN in Japan, and Russia's National Academy of Sciences. It will also establish several international research bases, interdisciplinary centers, joint labs and junior groups to create an active and highly effective platform and agreeable environment for such cooperation.

    The last but not least, CAS will, under the guidance and support of the government, actively participate in the implementation of various international science programs, striving to made its own contributions to such programs with Chinese characters and hosting more international or bilateral conferences. Chen added.
