At a press conference held on Nov. 24 in Beijing, CAS President Lu Yongxiang, who is also president of the CAS presidium, announced that 58 scientists and engineers had been elected new CAS members.
CAS membership is the highest academic title in the field of science and technology in China and an honor of life tenure conferred by the State. According to the “Bylaw on CAS Membership”, only those Chinese scientists and engineers who have made systematic and creative achievements and major contributions in the fields of science and technology, and who are patriotic, honest and upright in their style of learning may be nominated and elected as CAS members. Currently CAS has 688 members.
An election of CAS members is held every two years, and the number of newly elected CAS members in each election should not exceed 60. The new CAS members were elected from 309 candidates nominated by CAS members and/or academic institutions all over the country.
According to CAS Vice President Chen Yiyu, the 58 new CAS members are now working at institutions of seven government departments and three provinces or regions: 25 in CAS institutes; 20 in colleges under the Ministry of Education; four in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; three in the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation; and one in institution under the Ministry of Health, China Seismological Bureau, China Meteorological Administration, China National Petroleum Corporation, Henan Province and Shanxi Province, respectively. The average age of the 58 new members is about 58. The youngest one is 37 years old.
The followings are a name list of newly elected CAS members and their ages, specialties and affiliations at the time of election.
