Clinical research on AIDS/HIV medicine accepted

Nov 19, 2003

At an appraising meeting hosted by the Yunnan Provincial S&T Bureau, experts gave approval to the third stage of a clinical research on an anti-AIDS/HIV drug carried out by the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany (IOB).

Dubbed Compound SH, the anti-AIDS/HIV drug is developed by IOB researchers with five raw medicinal materials after screening more than 1,000 medicinal herbs from 120 plant families in light of the Chinese traditional medicine.

Based on the former two stages of the clinical research, the third stage was jointly implemented with the Thai Ministry of Public Health. During the trial, a total of 120 patients were put under clinical observation in three hospitals. The statistics showed a remarkable drop in the virus-carrying amount in the patient's body as a result of the medicine. In addition, both the bio-activity of T-4 cells and the organism's immunity were raised while no toxic by-effects were detected.

The experts at the appraisal meeting confirm that the third stage of the clinical research has been finished according to the terms of research contract. The research results show the drug boasts a good application prospect and all the preparations needed to officially apply for a new drug have been completed. Experts suggested that an application to the state drug authorities for an approval and a file for patent rights be started as soon as possible.
