European Union (EU) Environment Commissioner Margot Wallstrom gave a talk on cooperation between EU and China on environment issues during her trip to the CAS Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resource Research (IGSNRR) on Nov. 13.

    "The eyes of the world are on China. With 1.3 billion people and a dynamic economy, the path you choose has major global significance," Wallstrom said in her talk entitled Clean Growth for Tomorrow's China.

    Scientific, economic and political thinking should start from the assumption that China can "leap frog" straight to the most advanced environmental technologies, contended Wallstrom.

    She went on to say that China will avoid many of the mistakes made by industrialized countries, "as we went through our industrial revolution. Unfortunately, we did not know then what we know now. There was no textbook for us to follow."

    Talking about cooperation between China and EU, Wallstrom showed her satisfaction with the fact that the EU and China already actively cooperate in the field of the environment. During the period from 2002 to 2006, more than one-third (122 million Euros) of the total budget available for cooperation in China will be devoted to environmental protection.

    She believed that it is important to share expertise between scientific communities of the two sides. "We must share knowledge and expertise on the economic and scientific analyses at the root of all our policies," she noted.

    Wallstrom described the major task of her present trip to China, setting up an environmental dialogue between the EU and China, as very successful. She called on CAS researchers to contribute to the dialogue with their knowledge and expertise.

    During her trip to IGSNRR, the commissioner also visited its library and had a talk with IGSNRR director Liu Jiyuan and Liu Jian, Deputy Director of CAS Bureau of Resources and Environment. She was also briefed on two EU projects being carried out by IGSNRR researchers.

    An institute actively involved in research cooperation with European countries, IGSNRR currently has three projects supported by EU and a dozen others by six EU countries with a total funding up to 300,000 Euros.

    Wallstrom's talk shows an encouraging prospect for further cooperation between the two sides, says Liu Jiyuan. The institute will further its efforts to apply the expertise and advanced EU environment technologies to China's sustainable development.
