With an objective of exchanging cooperative achievements on climate research, a conference on climate science was held under the joint sponsorship of the CAS and US Department of Energy (DOE) on October 29 and 30.

    The participants of the meeting included nine scholars from US institutions such as Atmospheric Research Center under the State University of New York, National Climate Data Center, National Center for Atmospheric Research and State University of Portland and 20 Chinese researchers from the CAS Bureau of Resources & Environment, CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics and CAS Institute of Geographic Science & Natural Resources Research. Discussions were held on such research topics as simulation of global & regional climate, observation & analysis of greenhouse gases, compilation and analysis of climate data as well as the impact of global change.

    The scientists at the meeting came to a consensus: the ceaseless efforts over the past 20 years since 1983, when the Sino-US cooperative protocol for climate science was signed by CAS and DOE, not only leads to significant research results but also keeps the project at the cutting-edge of the field.

    Besides the sincerity and mutual benefit, what keeps the project continuing is its creative and pioneering topics, enabling scientists to spark out new inspirations and find interesting things to work on, says Prof. Ye Duzheng, a renowned meteorologist in China.

    The two sides reiterated their determination to go on with the cooperation by drafting a concrete scheme for the next two years.
