New Council of the China Society on Tibet Plateau elected

    A 2003-2006 Council of the Chinese Society on Tibet Plateau (CSTP) has been elected at the fourth CSTP national congress held on Oct. 23 in Beijing.

    The president of the new council, which is made up of 107 members, is Prof. Zheng Du, a CAS member from the CAS Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research (IGSNRR). The vice presidents are from the governments of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Gansu Province, Qinghai Province, China Meteorological Administration, China Tibetology Research Center, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, the CAS Institute of Qingzang Plateau Research, and Lanzhou University. Prof Zhu Liping from IGSNRR will be the Secretary-General.

    Foundded in March 1990, CSTP is a national, scholarly and non-profit organization consisting of scientists and technologists engaged in the research and construction of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. the CSTP The general affairs of the society is presided over by the secretariats office that is situated and funded IGSNRR.

    CSTP votes its leader institution, the council of CSTP every 4 years. Honorary president form the first to the fourth council is Mr. Ngapoi Ngawang Jigmei, now the Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. President of the first and second council is Prof. Liu Tunsheng who is an academician of CAS. President of the third council is Prof. Sun Honglie who is also an academician, and ever served as the member of National People's Congress.
