    More than 40 celebrated scientists from around the world came to Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, to witness the inauguration of the CAS Kunming International Center for Studies of Evolution and Biodiversity (KICSEB), the opening ceremony of which was held on Oct. 27.

    Based at the CAS Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ), the new center will be a fully independent affiliate of the Shanghai Institute for Advanced Studies (SIAS), a CAS venture established about one year ago with support from the Max Planck Society and the Volkswagenstiftung in Germany. By taking advantage of KIZ scholarship in fields ranging from cell, molecular studies to ecology and its strong coordination ability, the center will conduct research in frontier areas, and strive to be a key platform for raising the overall research level in the field of the region, which boasts richness of biodiversity, and even the whole country.

    It also seeks to become a think tank, research base and training center for interdisciplinary studies in research fields, including phylogeny of organisms, evolution of genes and genomes, evolution and development, evolution of human and primates (anthropology), evolution of social structure and behavior, ecology and conservation of animals and plants.

    As a virtual institution, ICSEB aims to establish a new model of institution on integrated science in China. The center has set up an academic board, which is composed of nine distinguished scientists from Germany, U.S. and China in the field. Under the board, the center's director will take charge of its operation. Each serving a five-year term, the director will be selected at home and abroad without nationality requirement. The founding director of KICSEB is Prof. Chung-I Wu, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ecology and Evolution under the University of Chicago.No more than 25 prominent researchers in the world will be invited as research fellows of the Center. They are to promote collaboration of research projects and joint postgraduate programs with Chinese researchers.

    Chinese scientists have done an outstanding job of collecting specimens and cataloging the country's extensive flora and fauna, SIAS director Uli Schwarz was quoted as saying, "but the time is ripe to synthesize the data and address larger interdisciplinary topics, such as interactions among species and changes in an ecological community over time."

    "The center will bring together what are now rather isolated efforts, provide an infrastructure for synthesis of data, and be a bridge between China and the outside," says Wu, who will spend two to three months in Kunming each year and maintain close contact with the center while he is outside China.
