A joint lab for anti-virus natural medicines set up in southwest China

Nov 05, 2003

With approval of the CAS Steering Committee for Research Bases in Southwest China, a joint lab devoted to the development of natural medicines against viral contagion is to be set up under the joint sponsorship of the Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB) and Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ), two research arms under the CAS in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The Committee asks the two institutes to step up their efforts in establishing the lab. In addition, related research work has to be initiated to make contributions to the national struggle against SARS and other viral epidemic diseases.

By taking advantage of the cutting-edge research virology at the two research bodies, the lab will focus on taping into the opulent reserves of wild plant and animal resources in the region. While accelerating their efforts in new drug development, its research scope will be further expanded. In the near future, the lab will target on the natural antidotes against some killing epidemics such as SARS and HIV/AIDS with its own patent rights.

Regarding the lab operation, the first stage of the lab's development is to be based on the framework of research teams headed by Prof. Chen Jijun at KIB and by Prof. Zheng Yongtang at KIZ. The lab will be headed by Prof. Zhou Jun, a phytochemist and CAS member from KIB and jointly financed by the two institutes.
