As the largest investment in infrastructure ever made in its history, CAS will begin work on reconstruction of its campus in the northern suburb of Beijing.The foundation laying ceremony for the renovation was held on Oct. 26.

    As the largest investment to infrastructure ever made in its history, CAS will begin work on reconstruction of its campus in the northern suburb of Beijing.

    Covering an area of about 376,000 square meters with a floor space of 350,000 square meters, the new research park will be home to nine CAS institutes. Besides six institutes which are located in the area (Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, National Astronomical Observatories, Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, Institute of Biophysics, Institute of Genetics and Development,and Institute of Psychology), three others will be relocated here from Zhongguancun and elsewhere (Institute of Zoology, Institute of Microbiology and China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station).

    The project is a major component of the national Knowledge Innovation Program (KIP) spearheaded by CAS, said Vice CAS President Chen Yiyu at the foundation laying ceremony held on Oct. 26. With an objective to enable CAS infrastructure to reach the medium level of developed countries in average, the blueprint of the campus has been decided upon by the CAS top decision-making body: the leading group of the Chinese Communist Party at CAS.

    Being adjacent to the upcoming 2008 Olympic facilities, including the National Stadium (the 2008 Olympic Main Stadium), the Forest Park and the Olympic Village, the research park will offer a nice environment for scientists. In addition, the new campus features the concept of opening, cooperation and resource shearing by doing away with the old practice of building walls to separate institutes
