CAS panel proposes priorities for earth science in next two decades

Oct 27, 2003

CAS Member Zhao Zhongxian, director of Working Committee on Consultation and Evaluation of the CAS Academic Divisions (CASAD), indicates recently that the Academic Division of Earth Sciences has drafted a consultative report on planning and strategic studies of the mid- and long-term development for earth sciences in China. He released the news at the senior forum on planning and strategic studies on mid- and long-term S&T development of CAS held recently in Beijing.

According to Zhao, six areas have been singled out as major orientation for the development of China's earth science in the next 15 to 20 years. They include the physical, chemical and biological processes of planet Earth and their synergistic evolution; the physical, biological and geochemical processes of oceans and their impact on resources and the environment; land-surface processes, resources & environment disasters, human activities and sustainable development; climate system and forecast on changes and trends of space weather; global change and Asian monsoons: evolution of arid environment system; the formation mechanism of oil, natural gas and other major mineral resources and new technology for their exploration and usability.

Two research platforms and mega-projects are suggested for the development of the six areas of earth science; an observation and testing system and an information and simulation system; and studies on geo-spatial information system and deep space (lunar and Mars) exploration.
