CAS researchers have succeeded in establishing a botanical garden at the center of the immense Taklimakan Desert. The success is the first of its kind in the world.

    CAS researchers participating in the S&T project for highway construction in the Taklimakan Desert have long cherished a desire to afforest the desert oilfield at the center of the Desert. Since 1994, scientists from the CAS Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography started a project to grow plants at the oilfield and along the highway of the Desert with the support from the China National Petroleum Corporation.

    By making use of the underground water with high salinity up to 5 g/liter, the researchers managed to create an artificial oasis in the Desert heartland. They selected about 70 kinds of suitable plants from 150 candidates, and by July 2001, a 31-kilometer-long experimental shatter belt was completed. About two million individuals of various kinds are planted in an area of 192 hectares, laying a solid foundation for planting trees along throughout the road in the Desert.

    Furthermore, the CAS researchers have set up a botanical garden at the oilfield by introducing about 160 varieties of plants on a 6.6 hectares plot. The garden consists of eight sections, including those devoted to major plant species for the ecological protection along the highway (such as Chinese Tamarisk, Caligonum and Poplar), precious and rare species in desert, the introduction of indigenous plants, economic plants in desert, ornamental plants in desert, saline plants, desert plants and a reservation for new introductions.
