Major achievements in basic research at CAS in 2002

Mar 31, 2003

As released at the recent annual work conference of CAS, its scientists scored important S&T achievements in basic research (mathematics, physics, chemistry and astronomy) in 2002.

The fabrication of periodic arrays of perfectly ordered identical-size nanoclusters and explanation for the cause of periodic array' s stability received attention from scholars in the world. The acquisition of the currently largest data sample in charm physics, which is one order of magnitude higher than the previous one in the world, and the precise R measurement in the energy range of 2-5GeV, which doubles or even triples the world average in precision, are widely recognized. The HT-7 Tokamak achieved discharge operation of 1,000 times higher than the energy confinement time with electron temperature beyond 10,000 k, marking that China has ranked one of the advanced countries of the world in terms of magnetic confinement fusion. In the research of molecular nanostructure and the fabrication and performance of molecular nanomaterials, CAS scientists assembled, for the first time, chiral molecules on solid surface in water solution, and observed its absolute configuration, leading to successful preparation of a surface with higher hydrophobic and lipophobic properties than that of natural materials. In the exploration of core mathematics, breakthroughs have been made on the global existence of solutions of Prandtl' s system, the demonstration of the world-famous Lusztig' s conjecture, and semi-classical limit of non-linear Schrodinger-Poisson Equations. Other outstanding results included studies on elastic property of single double-stranded DNA molecules and it' s application to tumor-suppressing activity of p53 regulatory protein, studies on the structure & evolution of the solar magnetic field, the cosmological model, and high-resolution numerical simulations for galaxy formation, and research on spaces of constant curvature, experiments of gas-liquid two-phase flow at a space station.

The HT-7 Tokamak achieved discharge operation of 1,000 times higher than the energy confinement time with electron temperature beyond 10,000 k.
