Promoting S&T cooperation in the South. CAS will host the TWAS 9th General Conference in Beijing.

    A group of events concerning scientific development in the South will be held by the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the Third World Network of Scientific Organizations (TWNSO) Oct. 16 - 19 in Beijing. This was released January 13 at a press conference at CAS headquarters.

    The events will include the TWAS Ninth General Conference, the 14th General Meeting of TWAS Fellows, the Eighth General Assembly of TWNSO, and the celebration of the 20th anniversary of TWAS, notes Lu Yongxiang, CAS president and TWAS vice president. They will be hosted by CAS in coordination with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, National Natural Science Foundation of China and China' s Association for Science and Technology.

    TWAS is an autonomous international organization, founded in Trieste, Italy in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the South under the leadership of the late Nobel laureate Abdus Salam of Pakistan. With an objective to promote scientific excellence for the sustainable development in the developing countries, the organization, since 1986, has supported scientific research in 100 or so countries in the South through a variety of programs.

    With the theme of science for development, three challenges facing the developing world  will dominate the discussions at the TWAS conference: scientific talent, scientific education and S&T development strategy, notes Guo Huadong, CAS director for international cooperation and secretary-general of the China' s organization committee of the TWAS conference.

    According to Guo, the events are expected to have about 500 participants, including TWAS members, ministers of science and technology, presidents of science academies and research councils as well as representatives of international organizations from the South and the North. Programs for the events will include lectures by the recipients of TWAS and TWNSO awards, the opening ceremony, TWAS and TWNSO medal lectures as well as invited lectures by distinguished scientists, a ministerial session on science and technology policy and management, and an E-session on scientific issues relevant to developing countries.

    This will be the second time for China to host such a meeting. The first time was in 1987. Promoting the cooperation and exchanges between developing countries will facilitate the joint development, says Lu, strengthen the friendship among their peoples and benefit the world peace, development and stability.
