The work for the election of CAS members in 2003 will start in January. According to the By-laws on the Membership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS membership elections must be held biennially, and each time the total number of new members to be elected must not exceed 60. The quota assigned for new CAS members this year is 60, of which 10 will be for the Division of Mathematics and Physics, 10 for the Division of Chemistry, 12 for the Division of Biology, 10 for the Division of Earth Sciences and 18 for the Division of Technological Sciences. The new rule concerning the age of nominees will be enforced this year. According to the revised Rules Concerning the Election of Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the nominees generally should be no older than 65 years of age.
